Brief Description:  The biggest economic depression to date hit the United States in 1837. The depression devastated most of the country, but St. Louis was largely spared its impact due to the constant stream of immigrants that continued to arrive from Germany and Ireland. St. Louis also benefited from the flow of Mexican silver that came through the City.
