  DuBourg Consecrated Bishop of Louisiana Purchase

Brief Description:  Louis William Valentin DuBourg was consecrated bishop of what was roughly the Louisiana Purchase. He set up residence in St. Louis, arriving January 4, 1818. DuBourg opened the St. Louis Academy and donated his own 8,000-volume library to it. He established a seminary for boys and persuaded the Order of the Sacred Heart to send Mother Phillipine Duchesne to St. Louis to open a school for girls and work with the Native Americans. Due to his efforts, the Catholic Church became a large and powerful force in St. Louis.
