  Brick homes and stores appear

Brief Description:  Brick homes and stores started to appear in St. Louis. Brick was used because of its durable nature and the shortage of nearby lumber. In 1812, Bartholomew Berthold and William Smith both built two-story, brick stores & dwellings, and a brick market house was contructed. By 1816, Christian Wilt, Manuel Lisa, Thomas McKnight and Thomas Brady, William C. Carr, Sylvester Papin, William Clark and William Rector also built brick stores with companion dwellings.
