Event: Municipal Opera Established Category: Architecture Brief Description: The Municipal Opera at Forest Park was established in 1919. The current outdoor theater was built in 1919 with profits from the wildly popular Pageant & Masque show held in 1914 on Art Hill. That show, a celebration of St. LouisĀ“ history, had attracted more than 450,000 people in five days. With its 12,000 seating capacity, the Municipal Opera is one of the largest outdoor theaters in the world. A City ordinance requires that a certain number of seats be offered free for every performance so that all St. Louisans may enjoy the presentations.
