Event:  Municipal Opera Established

Brief Description:  The Municipal Opera at Forest Park was established in 1919. The current outdoor theater was built in 1919 with profits from the wildly popular Pageant & Masque show held in 1914 on Art Hill. That show, a celebration of St. Louis´ history, had attracted more than 450,000 people in five days. With its 12,000 seating capacity, the Municipal Opera is one of the largest outdoor theaters in the world. A City ordinance requires that a certain number of seats be offered free for every performance so that all St. Louisans may enjoy the presentations. (Primm, 406)
