Event: 1880 Census Category: Demographics (immigration, etc.) Brief Description: The 1880 Census revealed that St .Louis had one of the richest ethnic mixes in the United States. Including the second generation population, nearly two-thirds of the population belonged to one of St. LouisĀ“s well-defined ethnic groups. Germans, Irish, and British also acocunted for a significant percentage of the population. There were also high numbers of French, Swiss, and Bohemian groups. This census also revealed that the numbers from the 1870 census had been inflated by federal census-takers, who waited until the City of Chicago had released its population numbers before they released the numbers for St. Louis.
