Event: St. Louis Centre Opens Brief Description: St. Louis Centre opened in 1986 as Downtown´s mall, linking Famous-Barr and Dillard´s with four levels of shops and a food court. St. Louis Centre´s opening and the opening of Union Station in 1985 signaled renewed optimism in Downtown´s future as a center of retail and entertainment. Their subsequent success, however, has been mixed. While Union Station is St. Louis´ second largest tourist attraction and specializes in food and souvenirs, St. Louis Centre has yet to make a profit. As of mid-2002, St. Louis Centre was facing a major reorganization, with some proposals calling for it to be shut down entirely or converted to condominiums. Dillard´s, one of its two anchors, closed in 2001. Famous-Barr remains committed to its downtown store and headquarters in the Railway Exchange Building, having just completed a number of capital improvements in and around its store.
