  First Resident Priest Arrives

Brief Description:  Father Valentine, a Capuchin Franciscan, was the first resident priest in St. Louis, arriving in May 1772. Fr. Valentine remained in St. Louis until 1774, when he returned to New Orleans. During his time in St. Louis, he led plans to build the villageĀ“s first church, but the structure was not completed until 1776.
